Liebe Pflanzenliebhaber und Freunde gesunder Atemluft,
in den letzten Wochen gab es immer wieder Fragen dazu und daher nehmen wir uns heute eines der wichtigsten Elemente in unserem AIRY System vor: den Wassertank.
Ein gut gepflegter Wassertank ist der Schlüssel zum Erfolg für gesunde und glückliche Pflanzen. Hier sind einige Tipps und Tricks, um das Beste aus deinem AIRY System herauszuholen:
1. Wasserqualität: Verwende stets sauberes, möglichst kalkarmes Wasser für dein AIRY System. Dies hilft, Ablagerungen im Tank zu reduzieren und das Wohlbefinden deiner Pflanzen zu gewährleisten. Das Gute: Pflanzen mögen "abgestandenes" Wasser. Das wird durch den Wassertank im AIRY Biofilter ohne weiteren Aufwand deinerseits gewährleistet.
2. Wasserstandsanzeiger: Bevor wir vor vielen Jahren AIRY erfunden haben, gab es Wasserstandsanzeiger nur für die sogenannte "Hydrokultur". Pflanzen in einer Hydrokultur stehen in einer toten, anorganischen Umgebung sprichwörtlich im Wasser. Dieses muss stets im Zustand "Optimal" gehalten werden, damit das System funktioniert. Bei AIRY ist das anders. Es gibt ein "Minimum" und ein "Maximum", das dir auf einfache und wie wir finden sehr schöne Weise den Füllstand signalisiert.
3. Füllstand: Du kannst den Wassertank im AIRY System gerne immer wieder nachfüllen bis zum "Maximum". ABER: Es gibt Pflanzen wie beispielsweise den Bogenhanf, die es zwischenzeitlich auch einmal etwas trockener mögen und brauchen. Beachte daher bitte die grundsätzlichen Anforderungen, die die von dir eingesetzte Pflanze mit sich bringt. 4. Verwendung von Wasserzusätzen: Je nach Bedarf und Pflanzenart kannst du dem Wasser im Tank gelegentlich spezielle Zusätze wie Dünger oder auch unseren AIRY Vitalizer hinzufügen. Achte jedoch darauf, die Dosierungsanweisungen zu beachten, um beispielsweise eine Überdüngung zu vermeiden. Grundsätzlich gilt: Weniger ist mehr!
5. Wie oft nachfüllen: In unserer Werbung und auch auf unserer Website sprechen wir davon, dass der Wassertank eines AIRY für eine recht lange Zeit (mehrere Wochen) hält. Das ist auch richtig. Allerdings muss in den ersten Wochen oftmals deutlich häufiger nachgefüllt werden. Der Grund dafür ist dann, dass die relative Luftfeuchtigkeit in der Umgebungsluft zu niedrig ist. Pflanze und Wassertank geben dann so lange MEHR Feuchtigkeit an die Raumluft ab, bis sich diese in einen für die Pflanze angenehmen Zustand eingependelt hat (40 bis 60%).
6. Substrat oder Einfüllstutzen: Zum Gießen gibt es einfache Regel, die sich aus den Erfahrungen der letzten Jahre abgeleitet hat:
Nach dem Bepflanzen des AIRY Systems in den ersten vier Wochen bitte vorsichtig über das Substrat NEBEN der Pflanze gießen.
Danach nur noch über den Einfüllstutzen direkt in den Wassertank gießen. Einzige Ausnahme: Sollte das AIRY System völlig durchgetrocknet sein, bitte wieder etwas Wasser über das Substrat gießen, bevor der Wassertank gefüllt wird. Erst dann ist die Kapillarität des Mineralsubstrats wieder hergestellt (jedes Mal wieder schön zu hören am Knistern, dass das Substrat von sich gibt, wenn es das Wasser einspeichert).
Abschließend noch ein Wort zur Größe des Wassertanks in den AIRY Biofiltern, denn die ist unterschiedlich:
- AIRY S: etwa 0,8 Liter
- AIRY M: etwa 1,6 Liter
- AIRY L: etwa 3,2 Liter
Ach ja, noch ein Punkt:
Der Wasserstandsanzeiger, also dieser lange Stab mit der kleinen blauen Wolke an der Spitze, wird durch ein bzw. zwei mit Luft gefüllte Kugeln angehoben. Also bitte nicht wundern, wenn du Wasser in Tank einfüllst und erst einmal NICHTS passiert. Das ist insbesondere beim AIRY Biofilter L der Fall und auch logisch: Das Wasser muss den Boden das Tanks bedecken und soweit ausfüllen, dass die Kugeln ansteigen. Und das dauert bei der Größe einen Augenblick...

Please excuse the very late reply to your comment. We just came across it by chance and realized that we are not automatically informed about the comments on our own blog…
To your points:
- the foul odor will probably have been caused by a lot of dirt accumulating in the water tank. This is encouraged, for example, if water is mainly poured over the mineral substrate or if fertilizers get stuck in the tank. In this respect, your cleaning measure was absolutely correct – and obviously successful, at least in this respect!
- to your second point. These are very likely to be fungus gnats. Although they are completely harmless to us humans, they are totally annoying and can also harm the plant in the long term. They are becoming increasingly common as plants are grown in greenhouses without peat and are therefore (more) biologically sound. Good for the environment, but also good for the reproduction of fungus gnats. The measures to be recommended are twofold: please collect the already living insects with so-called yellow boards, while the larvae can be controlled with various biologically sound means. We have had very good experience with the products from “Plantura”.

Dear Airy,
I have the large two-plant Airy, and the round single plant Airy. The water is both reservoirs smell quite foul. Our watering practice is to allow the meter to drop to the bottom reading before refilling. The plants seem to be healthy and thriving—cream anthurium.
With some flexible tubing I siphoned the water in the larger planter, flushed the substrate, refilled the reservoir to capacity, and drained it again. The foul smell is gone but mosquitos seem to be breeding in the reservoir.
Do you have suggestions for preventing / managing water quality and getting rid of unwanted insects?
