Houseplants are the epitome of naturalness, calm, and fresh air. But persistent myths circulate around these green roommates – from the "death sentence east window" to "houseplants = dust collectors." It's high time to clear up some of these misconceptions.
Here are 5 common plant misconceptions – and what is actually true.
1. Plants absolutely need direct sunlight
Misconception!
Many believe that nothing works without bright sun on the windowsill. But the opposite is often true: direct sun can even burn delicate leaves – especially in summer.
What is really true:
Many popular houseplants thrive better in bright, indirect light. Plants like pothos, snake plant, or the golden cane palm are true light all-rounders – they manage with little light and even forgive periods of shade.
2. The more you water, the better
Misconception!
The classic among plant misunderstandings. Overwatering is the most common reason houseplants die. The roots suffocate – and the plant looks thirsty. So you water again. Vicious cycle.
What is really true:
Less is often more. Almost all houseplants prefer the top layer of soil or substrate to dry out before watering again. And modern planting systems even indicate exactly when it’s time again.
3. Plants are dust collectors and unhygienic
Misconception!
Some people avoid plants because they "make a mess" or "promote mold." But the opposite is true – if you use the right planting system.
What is really true:
Houseplants demonstrably improve air quality by binding pollutants and regulating humidity. Those who rely on modern substrates like expanded clay or closed systems have no open soil, no mold, and no critters – just fresh air.
4. Plants don’t belong in the bedroom
Misconception!
"They take your oxygen away" – that’s often heard. But please don’t fear the green bedroom revolution!
What is really true:
Many plants are passive at night, yes. But some – like the snake plant – even release oxygen at night because they belong to the so-called CAM plants. These plants are not only beautiful but proven to promote sleep.
5. Plants are complicated and only for experts
Misconception!
The green thumb is not a gene – nor a prerequisite. Many think you need botanical knowledge and daily care time. Wrong assumption.
What is really true:
With the right plants (e.g. With the right plants (e.g., Sansevieria, Monstera, Spider Plant) and a good system, it almost works automatically. Those who also observe a bit and water every few weeks are already on the safe side.
Fewer myths, more green in life
Houseplants are neither fussy nor hard to care for – if you clear up a few misconceptions. And the best part: they reward you with better air, more well-being, and a home that simply feels more alive.
So no more excuses – bring on the green!
