Caring for a snake plant (we offer the Sansevieria Laurentii and the Sansevieria Zeylanica) is relatively simple. The plant is robust and requires little attention.

Especially cool: the snake plant is a CAM plant. This means it stores CO2 at night, which can lead to better sleep.

Care instructions for the snake plant

Location

Place the snake plant in a bright spot without direct sunlight. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves. However, these plants are quite tolerant of various light conditions.

Temperature

Snake plants prefer a temperature between 18°C and 24°C. They also tolerate occasional temperature fluctuations, e.g., if it gets colder at night, but should be protected from drafts.

Watering

Snake plants die from too much water and/or start to become soft and rot! Mineral substrate allows good drainage. Fill the water tank completely, then let it empty and wait at least a week before watering again, as snake plants can develop root rot. Snake plants are succulents and urgently need DRY PHASES. In general, it is better to water too little than too much.

Fertilizing

Fertilizing can be done but is not necessary. If you feel the need, fertilize your snake plant during the growing season (spring and summer) about every 6-8 weeks with a liquid houseplant fertilizer suitable for succulents or with our AIRY Booster. In autumn and winter it needs less fertilizer but can also do without it entirely.

Pests and diseases

Snake plants are quite robust against pests and diseases, but occasionally they can be infested by spider mites or mealybugs. Regularly inspect the plant for signs of pests and treat it if necessary with a mild insecticide or neem oil. Immediately cut off and remove any rotten or mushy leaves at the base.

If your snake plant gets fungus gnats (small black flies), you should act very quickly as these flies reproduce super fast. We have had good experiences with products from PLANTURA.

Cleaning

The shiny leaves of the snake plant can accumulate dust. Occasionally wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them clean.

Soon you will be able to discover new leaves and shoots.
